Synology announced the DiskStation DS1522+, a new compact five-bay network-attached storage NAS. Synology describes the DS1522+ as a data hub suitable for data sharing, synchronization and backup.

What is a NAS?

A NAS is a data storage system that you connect to a network, rather than directly to a computer, as with an external hard disk drive. As such, any computers logged on to the network can access the NAS. You can even log into it remotely if your network is connected to the internet.

The DiskStation DS1522+ supports up to five 3.5-inch or 2.5-inch SATA hard disk drives or SSDs. These drives are also hot-swappable, which means that you can remove and replace them without needing to shut the device down. In addition, you can add even more storage with the optional Synology DX517 expansion units. These allow you to expand the device to have fifteen drives.

Fast transfers

The DiskStation DS1522+ gives you fast performance, up to 736 MB/s sequential read and 796 MB/s sequential write speeds. In addition, the DS1522+ has four Gigabit RJ-45 ports. These speeds mean you can be sure of fast file sharing, syncing, streaming and backup for multiple users. The device also has two built-in M.2 NVMe SSD cache slots and an optional 10GbE RJ-45 Network Upgrade Module for even faster speeds.

Other features

The DiskStation DS1522+ is a compact NAS measuring only 6.5 inches by 9 inches by 8.8 inches. It comes with 8 GB of system memory installed, and you can expand that to 32GB if needed. In addition to data storage, you can add IP cameras and use the DS1522+ as a surveillance system.

Pricing and availability

The Synology DiskStation DS1522+ is available now for $699. However, this price doesn’t include any drives, so you need to add the cost of those if you are considering the system.
