Sony has released a new Version 2.00 software update for the company’s FX3 Cinema Line camera. One of the criticisms of the FX3 has been that it is just an A7S3 in a different shell. So does the Version 2.00 update for the FX3 means that the camera finally earns its Cinema Line moniker? Read on to find out.
New Log shooting modes
With the Version 2.00 update, Sony has added new log shooting modes to the FX3. With Flexible ISO, you can change the ISO to make exposure adjustments. However, Cine EI and Cine EI Quick use the FX3’s base ISOs of 800 and 12,800. These modes take advantage of the wide dynamic range of S-Log 3 and produce footage that can be adjusted in post-production to balance highlights and shadows. All three modes allow video shooting while monitoring with an appropriate LUT to preview the final image. One point to note is that S-Log 2 has been removed from the FX3 with this update.
Monitoring with LUTs
The Version 2.00 update allows you to monitor your image with LUTs. You can import your own LUTs with 16 memory slots available for you to use. There are also preset LUTS provided by Sony for S-Log3, s709, or 709 (800 percent). You can use the LUTs to preview the final image while you shoot. Additionally, you can choose to burn the LUT into your video for quick delivery of the footage.

User interface
Sony has improved the FX3 user interface experience with the Version 2.00 update. The new standby movie screen moves the camera information data above and below the video image. This means you have an unobstructed view of your subject, so you won’t miss a detail due to an overlay. There is also a new tiled-style main menu which gives you quick access to frequently used items. You can also access a new Instant Function menu display by simply swiping up on the screen.
Timecode sync
The Version 2.00 update for the FX3 adds the option for professional timecode sync. You can now input timecode from other devices using the VNC-BNCM1 Adapter Cable. The adapter connects to the FX3’s micro-USB ports and allows you to connect a BNC cable.
Is this a good update?
With the Version 2.00 update, the FX3 has adopted features from the Sony FX6, as well as the FX9 and even Sony Venice Cinema Line cameras. There are still some essential cinema camera features missing, such as true 24 fps recording and the ability to use shutter angle rather than shutter speed. However, with the Version 2.00 update, the FX3 has now distanced itself from the A7S III and can establish itself as a separate camera in its own right.
