NiSi has just announced a new super-wide-angle prime lens for APS-C cameras. The NiSi 9mm f/2.8 Sunstar lens will be available with Fujifilm X, Sony E, Canon Rf, Nikon Z and Micro Four Thirds lens mounts.
Aperture
The NiSi 9mm Sunstar lens has a maximum aperture of f/2.8. This should give the lens a good low-light performance. The iris also has 10 straight aperture blades which should give a nice bokeh effect in out-of-focus areas. The lens has the Sunstar moniker because NiSi says that the lens gives sun stars from point light sources at all apertures from f/2.8 to f/16. In addition, the aperture ring is clickless which means you can smoothly change exposure while filming video.
Focus
The NiSi 9mm Sunstar lens has a close focus distance of under 8 inches (0.2m). The lens also has a focus throw of around 120 degrees. This will help to ensure that you can accurately and smoothly hit your focus. However, the 9 mm lens is a purely manual lens so it can’t pass any information to your camera for focus confirmation, etc.

Optical construction
Optically, the NiSi 9mm f/2.8 Sunstar has 14 lens elements in 12 groups. These include two double-sided aspherical glass elements. There are also four extra-low dispersion glass elements. In addition, NiSi states that the lens has ultra-low chromatic aberration and super flare resistance.
Construction
The NiSi 9mm f/2.8 Sunstar lens has an all-metal construction. However, it is still relatively lightweight at only 12.8 ounces (364 g). It is also compact, measuring a little over 3 inches (78mm) in length. The company also states that the lens is weather sealed and there is a yellow rubber gasket at the bayonet mount. The 9mm lens has a 67 mm filter thread. In addition, it comes with a petal-type aluminum lens hood.
Verdict
The 9 mm lens is the second wide angle lens from NiSi, giving APS-C users a broadly similar field of view to the company’s full-frame 15 mm f/4 Sunstar lens. The company has also announced the F3 range of cinema prime lenses. NiSi’s lens range is definitely one to watch for the future.
Pricing and availability
The NiSi 9mm f/2.8 Sunstar lens is set to retail at $459. NiSi has not announced a launch date yet.
