Nikon has released another firmware update for the Nikon Z 9 full-frame mirrorless camera. The firmware 3.0 update is the second major update to the Z 9 this year. The latest update adds enhancements to video and photo capture, usability, operability and autofocus. Here are some of the highlights.
High-Res Zoom
When you are capturing 4K UHD video, you can use the High-Res Zoom feature to extend the focal range of your lens. To achieve this, 4K UHD footage is captured in 8K UHD resolution. It is then gradually cropped to the 4K frame size in real time. This means you can effectively double the focal length while maintaining resolution. In addition, High-Res Zoom works with any lens. You can also assign the feature the camera’s Fn1/Fn2 buttons, a lens’ control ring or the left/right buttons on the multi-selector.
High-Frequency Flicker Reduction
Nikon added High-Frequency Flicker Reduction for still photography with firmware version 2.10. However, with the latest update, the feature is now available for video recording. High-Frequency Flicker Reduction lets you fine-tune shutter speeds manually in very small increments to eliminate flicker in LED light sources. High-Frequency Flicker Reduction is available with shutter speeds between 1/8,000 and 1/30 seconds.

Timecode synchronization
You can now control the timecode across multiple Z 9 cameras with a single wireless remote control. This means that you can reset the time code by pressing the shutter-release button on an optional WR-T10 wireless remote controller. This controller must be paired with a WR-R11a or WR-R10 wireless remote controller attached to the camera. In addition, ATOMOS UltraSync BLUE is now also supported over a Bluetooth connection. This enables the syncing of recording equipment and audio-device timecodes, including equipment from other manufacturers.
Verdict
The latest firmware update for the Nikon Z 9 adds some great new features. The High-Res Zoom could be very useful, especially when shooting run and gun, to save the need to change a lens. Similarly, the High-Frequency Flicker Reduction feature could be a lifesaver when dealing with practicals or environmental lights out of your control. If you have a Z 9, you should upgrade as soon as possible to take advantage of the new features.
