Is the Nikon Z 7 really discontinued?

Reports are circulating online that Nikon has discontinued its full-frame Z 7 mirrorless camera. So, what is the story behind these rumors?

The history

Nikon launched the 45.7-megapixel full-frame mirrorless interchangeable-lens Z 7 camera in September 2018. It was the first camera to use Nikon’s new Z-mount. By the end of the year, Nikon has also released the 24.5 megapixel Z 6 full frame camera and several lenses. In October 2020, the updated Nikon Z 7II was announced alongside the new version Nikon Z 6II. However, the original Z 7 and Z 6 continued to be produced.

What has been announced?

Nikon hasn’t actually made any announcements regarding the Z 7. However, a number of online sources have picked up on a recent update to the Nikon Japan website. The Z 7 is now listed on that site with the description “old product” next to it. This is the way that Nikon phases out discontinued products from its catalog. Interestingly, the Z 6 has not yet been marked as being an old product, so would appear to be still in production despite being the same generation as the Z 7.

What’s to come for the Z 7?

The Nikon USA and Nikon UK websites don’t list the Z 7 as an old product. However, the consensus seems to be that this is just due to delays in website updates rather than local policy. Major retailers such as B&H have listed the Nikon Z 7 body only and most of the camera and lens packages as discontinued. The few remaining cameras and lens bundles shown as in stock are being quite heavily discounted. This means that the company is selling off the remaining stock. B&H have similarly marked as discontinued or has discounted most of their Nikon Z 6 packages as well.

Keep an eye out

Even the best cameras eventually get phased out. The Z 7 still has a lot to offer, and with the discounts available, you can grab yourself a bargain while stocks last. The discontinuing of the Z 7 and Z 6 also suggest that Nikon may be preparing to add some newer models to their range, so watch this space.
