In this article for NewscastStudio, the transformative impact of LiveU’s ecosystem on live IP video coverage during the 2024 U.S. Presidential Election is explored. LiveU, a pioneer in live IP-video technology since 2006, played a central role in enabling real-time reporting and in-depth coverage. The 2024 election saw LiveU’s largest deployment yet, with over 4,000 field units in action, nearly doubling the usage from the 2020 election. These units powered nonstop, on-the-ground reporting for journalists and broadcasters, transmitting over 40 terabytes of data—equivalent to nearly 40,000 hours of live content—from 925 customers in 56 countries.
LiveU’s flagship LU800 units were a cornerstone of the coverage, supporting both remote (REMI) and on-site production workflows. These units enabled live feeds from campaign events, victory and concession speeches, and supporters’ reactions to reach control rooms across the U.S. and international markets, including Latin America, Europe, and Asia-Pacific. The cloud-based LiveU Matrix platform also played a critical role, distributing 23,000 hours of live feeds and enabling broadcasters to share 7,500 live streams. This represented nearly double the content shared during the 2020 election, showcasing the platform’s ability to create collaborative news pools and expand coverage from battleground states to campaign headquarters worldwide.
Another game-changer for broadcasters was the widespread deployment of LiveU Ingest, a story-centric solution designed to streamline live video production. For the first time during a major event, leading broadcasters utilized this tool to automatically record and tag live feed metadata, fully integrated with their Media Asset Management (MAM) systems. This feature processed more than 6,500 recordings and 4,000 hours of content during Election Day, allowing stations to share and access each other’s content seamlessly while ensuring faster video processing in the field. LiveU’s Reliable Transport (LRT™) protocol and Mobile Data services further enhanced connectivity at key campaign sites, providing consistent and resilient performance.
To ensure flawless coverage, LiveU established a dedicated Election Day taskforce that offered 24/7 customer support via phone and email. Engineers were stationed at candidate headquarters to provide technical assistance and additional equipment as needed. Earlier in the election cycle, during the Republican and Democratic National Conventions, LiveU introduced its Private 5G Connectivity option, offering broadcasters uncontested, high-speed connectivity—a service that will also be available for the upcoming inauguration.
Brian Tully, Senior VP of Sales at LiveU, noted the monumental scale of this election’s video traffic, with LiveU technology at the center of every stage of production. From on-location encoding to production control rooms and collaborative sharing, LiveU’s ecosystem ensured the highest levels of reliability, video quality, and customer support. Tully highlighted the round-the-clock efforts of LiveU’s Customer Success team and the invaluable role of LiveU Ingest in optimizing the workflow for broadcasters.
The 2024 U.S. Presidential Election demonstrated how LiveU continues to lead the industry in live IP-video solutions, setting a new standard for global election coverage. By empowering broadcasters with cutting-edge tools like LiveU Matrix and LiveU Ingest, the company ensured seamless, high-quality content delivery for an event of unprecedented scale and significance.
