DZOFilm has announced two new full-frame cine lenses for its Vespid Prime lens line. The latest lenses are the Vespid Prime 21mm and 40mm, both with a maximum aperture of T2.1. That means there are now ten lenses in the Vespid Prime set. The other lenses are 25 mm, 35 mm, 50 mm, 75 mm, 100 mm and 125 mm, all also with a maximum aperture of T2.1. In addition, there is a 16 mm and a Macro 90 mm lens, both with a maximum aperture of T2.8.
DZOFilm designed these lenses for full-frame cameras
The DZOFilm Vespid Prime 21mm and 40mm lenses have an interchangeable lens mount, which means you can use them with either PL or EF mount cameras. They’re also designed to be used with full-frame cameras, providing complete coverage for large format cameras with an image circle at 46.5 mm. The 21 mm lens weighs just under 33 ounces, and the 40 mm just over that weight.
Like other DZOFilm Vespid Prime lenses, they are fully manual
As with all of the Vespid Prime range, the new lenses are fully manual. The 21 mm and 40 mm lenses have a 270-degree focus throw. This gives you precise control for smooth and accurate focus. The 21 mm lens can focus as close as 11 inches, while the 40 mm lens has a close focus distance of 12 inches. The lenses have the focus scale marked in both imperial and metric units. Both the focus and iris ring have standard pitch gear rings for use with a follow focus.

What about their aperture?
The iris ring of the DZOFilm Vespid Prime 21mm and 40mm lenses have a 68-degree rotation angle and a range from T2.1 to T22. The aperture has 16 blades, which should give a pleasing, circular bokeh in out-of-focus areas. As these are cinema lenses, the aperture is denoted in T-stops rather than F stops. T stops are a measure of actual light transmitted by the lens whereas F-stops are a theoretical calculation. As such, T-stops are always slightly slower than F-stops due to losses in light transmission caused by the glass elements.
Other features
As with all of the lenses in the Vespid Prime family, the 21mm and 40mm lenses have a lens diameter of 80mm and filter thread size of 77mm. In addition, you can magnetically attach DZOFilm’s Koop filters to the rear of the lenses. The Koop filter range includes ND, UV, Black Mist and Blue Streak filters.
Verdict
The DZOFilm Vespid Prime cinema lenses are high-quality lenses. The optics are designed to give you an organic look that is a cross between the modern-day,technically-precise aesthetic and vintage cinema lenses. The 21 mm and 40 mm lenses are also small enough that you could use them as run and gun lenses or on a gimbal. If you can afford them, the Vespid Prime lens range are a great choice.
Availability
The Vespid Prime 21mm and 40mm lenses will retail at $1,399. They are also available as part of the full ten-lens Vespid Prime kit at $13,199. DZOFilm says that the lenses will ship by the end of July 2022.
