DZOFilm releases new Vespid Cyber prime lenses

DZOFilm’s Vespid Cyber prime lenses build on the image quality of the company’s Vespid range. However, the Cyber lenses also incorporate clever electronics to pass aperture and focus data.

DZOFilm lens range

The DZOFilm Vespid Cyber prime lens range currently includes a 35 mm, 50 mm and 75 mm cine lens. The lenses cover an image circle of 46.5 mm. This means you can use them with full-frame and Vista Vision sensors. In addition, the Vespid Cyber prime lenses come with interchangeable PL and EF mounts. The EF mount can also be adapted to a range of other mounts such as M43 and Sony E.

DZOFilm confirms data connection

The Vespid Cyber lenses are fully manual. However, the body of the lenses has a socket for you to connect a 4-pin LEMO plug. This data interface gives real-time transmission of focusing and aperture data. The data can also be used by a DJI Ronin RS3 Pro gimbal with the LiDAR focusing accessory. When connected you don’t have to calibrate your lenses which can save a lot of time when you swap between different lenses. In addition, DZOFilm says that the data can be applied in post-production and virtual production.

The Vespid Cyber prime lenses have an aperture range from T2.1 to T22. They also have 16 aperture blades which should give a smooth circular bokeh in out-of-focus areas. In addition, the focus rings have a 270-degree throw, which makes it much easier to accurately hit the correct focus. The 35mm lens has a close focus distance of 1 foot (0.3 m). The 50mm lens can focus down to 1.6 feet (0.46 m), and for the 75mm, it’s 2 feet (0.6 m).

Verdict

The DZOFilm Vespid Cyber Prime lenses are an interesting proposition. If you use a DJI Ronin RS3 Pro, they will save you so much time on set by removing the need to calibrate your lenses. You can also use the data in virtual production and post-production work. Hopefully, more manufacturers and equipment suppliers will take advantage of the data supplied by the lenses in the future. However, the Cyber prime lenses each cost $870 more than the regular Vespid primes. That’s a big extra investment if you can’t use the electronic data straight away.

Pricing and availability

The DZOFilm Vespid Cyber Primes are available now. The 35 mm, 50 mm and 75 mm lenses retail at $2,269 when bought individually or at $6,599 for a set of all three.
