Challenge: Moisture Detection under Thermal Insulation Cover – Technology Org

NineSigma, representing ExxonMobil, invites proposals for technologies that enable (semi-) continuous detection of moisture on steel infrastructures under both hot and cold insulation systems, and provide qualitative or semi-quantitative results over time.

The target applications range over several types of infrastructures, including process towers, large vessels and pipes.

As infrastructure are installed in open air, they are constantly exposed to atmospheric water. Moisture can penetrate the insulation materials and accumulate on specific areas of the steel wall, which dramatically increases the risk of corrosive phenomena of the steel structure.

The insulation layers covering the structure make monitoring the steel surface difficult and makes access not trivial. Altering the insulation layers to access the wall underneath may compromise their integrity and create preferential routes for water/moisture to successively get in.
