Moment is known for its accessories and lenses for mobile phones. However, the company has now launched a Kickstarter campaign for the Moment Anamorphic Adaptor which can turn almost any lens into a classic anamorphic lens.

Here are some of the top features it has to offer.

1.33x anamorphic

The Moment Anamorphic Adaptor has a 1.33x squeeze factor. This means that it transforms regular 16:9 video into full 2.35:1 widescreen. The advantage of using a 1.33X anamorphic lens is that all of your sensor is used in the final footage. Traditional 2x anamorphic lenses were intended for use with 4:3 film and so only cover the center section of a modern 16:9 video sensor. The Moment Anamorphic Adaptor also has coatings to give gold anamorphic lens flares.

Use with any lens

The Moment Anamorphic Adaptor is designed to convert both modern and vintage lenses into an anamorphic lens. To use it, you simply screw the adaptor to the front of your lens. The adaptor has a rear thread size of 67 mm so you can attach it directly to a lens with the same filter size. You can also use step-up or step-down rings to attach the adaptor to lenses with other filter thread sizes.

Easy to use

Anamorphic adaptors can be tricky to use. However, Moment claims that this one is quick and easy to set up. Once you have attached the adaptor to your lens you simply press a button to align the lens vertically. This ensures that your video will be correctly squeezed. You have to set your lens focus to infinity and switch off any autofocus. All focusing is done manually with the focus ring on the Moment Adaptor. The close focus distance is 27.6 inches and the focus ring supports 180-degree rotation.

Compatibility

The Moment Anamorphic Adaptor can be used with full-frame, S35 and Micro Four Thirds lenses. With a full-frame sensor, you can use prime lenses between 50-135 mm and zoom lenses between 55-135 mm. For S35 cameras the range is slightly wider at 35-135 mm for primes and 40-135mm for zoom lenses. Micro Four Thirds lenses offer the widest compatibility so you can use prime lenses between 24-135 mm and zoom lenses between 30-135 mm.

Construction

The Moment Anamorphic Adaptor has six lens elements in four groups. The adaptor weighs 1.94 pounds and has a maximum length of 3.6 inches. The Kickstarter page does not state what the body of the adaptor is made from. The adaptor also comes with a weatherproof EVA carrying case, a front and rear lens cap and three step-up adaptor rings.

Pricing and availability

Moment state that the regular price for the Anamorphic Adaptor will be $1,299 plus postage. However, if you back the Kickstarter campaign early you can get a discount of up to $400. The campaign runs to 21 July 2022 and Moment aims to start shipping in December 2022.
