The internet is awash in instructional videos that can teach curious viewers everything from cooking the perfect pancake to performing a life-saving Heimlich maneuver.

But pinpointing when and where a particular action happens in a long video can be tedious. To streamline the process, scientists are trying to teach computers to perform this task. Ideally, a user could just describe the action they’re looking for, and an AI model would skip to its location in the video.

However, teaching machine-learning models to do this usually requires a great deal of expensive video data that have been painstakingly hand-labeled.

A new, more efficient approach from researchers at MIT and the MIT-IBM Watson AI Lab trains a model to perform this task, known as spatio-temporal grounding, using only videos and their automatically generated transcripts.

The researchers teach a model to understand an unlabeled video in two distinct ways: by looking at small details to figure out where objects are located (spatial information) and looking at the bigger picture to understand when the action occurs (temporal information).

Compared to other AI approaches, their method more accurately identifies actions in longer videos with multiple activities. Interestingly, they found that simultaneously training on spatial and temporal information makes a model better at identifying each individually.

In addition to streamlining online learning and virtual training processes, this technique could also be useful in health care settings by rapidly finding key moments in videos of diagnostic procedures, for example.

“We disentangle the challenge of trying to encode spatial and temporal information all at once and instead think about it like two experts working on their own, which turns out to be a more explicit way to encode the information. Our model, which combines these two separate branches, leads to the best performance,” says Brian Chen, lead author of a paper on this technique.

Chen, a 2023 graduate of Columbia University who conducted this research while a visiting student at the MIT-IBM Watson AI Lab, is joined on the paper by James Glass, senior research scientist, member of the MIT-IBM Watson AI Lab, and head of the Spoken Language Systems Group in the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL); Hilde Kuehne, a member of the MIT-IBM Watson AI Lab who is also affiliated with Goethe University Frankfurt; and others at MIT, Goethe University, the MIT-IBM Watson AI Lab, and Quality Match GmbH. The research will be presented at the Conference on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition.

Global and local learning

Researchers usually teach models to perform spatio-temporal grounding using videos in which humans have annotated the start and end times of particular tasks.

Not only is generating these data expensive, but it can be difficult for humans to figure out exactly what to label. If the action is “cooking a pancake,” does that action start when the chef begins mixing the batter or when she pours it into the pan?

“This time, the task may be about cooking, but next time, it might be about fixing a car. There are so many different domains for people to annotate. But if we can learn everything without labels, it is a more general solution,” Chen says.

For their approach, the researchers use unlabeled instructional videos and accompanying text transcripts from a website like YouTube as training data. These don’t need any special preparation.

They split the training process into two pieces. For one, they teach a machine-learning model to look at the entire video to understand what actions happen at certain times. This high-level information is called a global representation.

For the second, they teach the model to focus on a specific region in parts of the video where action is happening. In a large kitchen, for instance, the model might only need to focus on the wooden spoon a chef is using to mix pancake batter, rather than the entire counter. This fine-grained information is called a local representation.

The researchers incorporate an additional component into their framework to mitigate misalignments that occur between narration and video. Perhaps the chef talks about cooking the pancake first and performs the action later.

To develop a more realistic solution, the researchers focused on uncut videos that are several minutes long. In contrast, most AI techniques train using few-second clips that someone trimmed to show only one action.

A new benchmark

But when they came to evaluate their approach, the researchers couldn’t find an effective benchmark for testing a model on these longer, uncut videos — so they created one.

To build their benchmark dataset, the researchers devised a new annotation technique that works well for identifying multistep actions. They had users mark the intersection of objects, like the point where a knife edge cuts a tomato, rather than drawing a box around important objects.

“This is more clearly defined and speeds up the annotation process, which reduces the human labor and cost,” Chen says.

Plus, having multiple people do point annotation on the same video can better capture actions that occur over time, like the flow of milk being poured. All annotators won’t mark the exact same point in the flow of liquid.

When they used this benchmark to test their approach, the researchers found that it was more accurate at pinpointing actions than other AI techniques.

Their method was also better at focusing on human-object interactions. For instance, if the action is “serving a pancake,” many other approaches might focus only on key objects, like a stack of pancakes sitting on a counter. Instead, their method focuses on the actual moment when the chef flips a pancake onto a plate.

Next, the researchers plan to enhance their approach so models can automatically detect when text and narration are not aligned, and switch focus from one modality to the other. They also want to extend their framework to audio data, since there are usually strong correlations between actions and the sounds objects make.

This research is funded, in part, by the MIT-IBM Watson AI Lab.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:

OpenAI is setting up a new safety oversight committee after facing criticism that safety measures were being deprioritized in favor of new and “shiny” product capabilities.

CEO Sam Altman and Chairman Bret Taylor will co-lead the safety committee, alongside four additional OpenAI technical and policy experts. Committee members also include Adam D’Angelo, the CEO of Quora, and Nicole Seligman, who previously served as general counsel for the Sony Corporation.

The committee will initially evaluate OpenAI’s existing processes and safeguards. Within 90 days, the committee is due to submit formal recommendations to OpenAI’s board, outlining proposed improvements and new security measures.

OpenAI has committed to publicly releasing the recommendations as a means of increasing accountability and public trust.

Addressing user safety

In addition to scrutinizing current practices, the committee will contend with complex challenges around aligning AI system operations with human values, mitigating potential negative societal impacts, implementing scalable oversight mechanisms and developing robust tools for AI governance.

AI ethics researchers and several of the company’s own employees have critically questioned the prioritization of commercial interests over detailed safety evaluations. The release of ChatGPT-4o has amplified these concerns, as ChatGPT-4o is significantly more capable than past iterations of the technology.

Major AI research labs (think Anthropic, DeepMind…etc) and other tech giants pursuing AI development will likely follow OpenAI’s lead by forming independent safety and ethics review boards.

Sophia Chen: It’s our duty to make the world better through empathy, patience, and respect

Sophia Chen, a fifth-year senior double majoring in mechanical engineering and art and design, learned about MIT D-Lab when she was a Florida middle schooler. She drove with her family from their home in Clearwater to Tampa to an MIT informational open house for prospective students. There, she heard about a moringa seed press that had been developed by D-Lab students. Those students, Kwami Williams ’12 and Emily Cunningham (a cross-registered Harvard University student), went on to found MoringaConnect with a goal of increasing Ghanaian farmer incomes. Over the past 12 years, the company has done just that, sometimes by a factor of 10 or more, by selling to wholesalers and establishing their own line of moringa skin and hair care products, as well as nutritional supplements and teas.

“I remember getting chills,” says Sophia. “I was so in awe. MIT had always been my dream college growing up, but hearing this particular story truly cemented that dream. I even talked about D-Lab during my admissions interview. Once I came to MIT, I knew I had to take a D-Lab class — and now, at the end of my five years, I’ve taken four.”

Taking four D-Lab classes during her undergraduate years may make Sophia exceptional, though not unusual. Of the nearly 4,000 enrollments in D-Lab classes over the past 22 years, as many as 20 percent took at least two classes, and many take three or more by the time the graduate. For Sophia, her D-Lab classes were a logical progression that both confirmed and expanded her career goals in global medicine.

Centering the role of project community partners

Sophia’s first D-Lab class was 2.722J / EC.720 (D-Lab: Design). Like all D-Lab classes, D-Lab: Design is project-based and centers the knowledge and contributions of each project’s community partner. Her team worked with a group in Uganda called Safe Water Harvesters on a project aimed at creating a solar-powered atmospheric water harvester using desiccants. They focused on early research and development for the desiccant technology by running tests for vapor absorption. Safe Water Harvesters designed the parameters and goals of the project and collaborated with the students remotely throughout the semester.

Safe Water Harvesters’ role in the project was key to the project’s success. “At D-Lab, I learned the importance of understanding that solutions in international development must come from the voices and needs of people whom the intervention is trying to serve,” she says. “Some of the first questions we were taught to ask are ‘what materials and manufacturing processes are available?’ and ‘how is this technology going to be maintained by the community?’”

The link between water access and gender inequity

Electing to join the water harvesting project in Uganda was no accident. The previous summer, Sophia had interned with a startup targeting the spread of cholera in developing areas by engineering a new type of rapid detection technology that would sample from users’ local water sources. From there, she joined Professor Amos Winter’s Global Engineering and Research (GEAR) Lab as an Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program student and worked on a point-of-use desalination unit for households in India. 

Taking EC.715 (D-Lab: Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) was a logical next step for Sophia. “This class was life-changing,” she says. “I was already passionate about clean water access and global resource equity, but I quickly discovered the complexity of WASH not just as an issue of poverty but as an issue of gender.” She joined a project spearheaded by a classmate from Nepal, which aimed to address the social taboos surrounding menstruation among Nepalese schoolgirls.

“This class and project helped me realize that water insecurity and gender inequality — especially gender-based violence — ​are highly intertwined,” comments Sophia. This plays out in a variety of ways. Where there is poor sanitation infrastructure in schools, girls often miss classes or drop out altogether when menstruating. And where water is scarce, women and girls often walk miles to collect water to accommodate daily drinking, cooking, and hygiene needs. During this trek, they are vulnerable to assault and the pressure to engage in transactional sex at water access points.

“It became clear to me that women are disproportionately affected by water insecurity, and that water is key to understanding women’s empowerment,” comments Sophia, “and that I wanted to keep learning about the field of development and how it intersects with gender!”

So, in fall 2023, Sophia took both 11.025/EC.701 (D-Lab: Development) and WGS.277/EC.718 (D-Lab: Gender and Development). In D-Lab: Development, her team worked with Tatirano, a nongovernmental organization in Madagascar, to develop a vapor-condensing chamber for a water desalination system, a prototype they were able to test and iterate in Madagascar at the end of the semester.

Getting out into the world through D-Lab fieldwork

“Fieldwork with D-Lab is an eye-opening experience that anyone could benefit from,” says Sophia. “It’s easy to get lost in the MIT and tech bubble. But there’s a whole world out there with people who live such different lives than many of us, and we can learn even more from them than we can from our psets.”

For Sophia’s D-Lab: Gender and Development class, she worked with the Society Empowerment Project in Kenya, ultimately traveling there during MIT’s Independent Activities Period last January. In Kenya, she worked with her team to run a workshop with teen parents to identify risk factors prior to pregnancy and postpartum challenges, in order to then ideate and develop solutions such as social programs. 

“Through my fieldwork in Kenya and Madagascar,” says Sophia, “it became clear how important it is to create community-based solutions that are led and maintained by community members. Solutions need community input, leadership, and trust. Ultimately, this is the only way to have long-lasting, high-impact, sustainable change. One of my D-Lab trip leaders said that you cannot import solutions. I hope all engineers recognize the significance of this statement. It is our duty as engineers and scientists to make the world a better place while carrying values of empathy, patience, and respect.”

Pursuing passion and purpose at the intersection of medicine, technology, and policy

After graduation in June, Sophia will be traveling to South Africa through MISTI Africa to help with a clinical trial and community outreach. She then intends to pursue a master’s in global health and apply to medical school, with the goal of working in global health at the intersection of medicine, technology, and policy.

“It is no understatement to say that D-Lab has played a central role in helping me discover what I’m passionate about and what my purpose is in life,” she says. “I hope to dedicate my career towards solving global health inequity and gender inequality.” ​

Killer Klowns From Outer Space: The Game Review – More Fun Than A Pie In The Face – Game Informer

It’s only a matter of time before IllFonic perfects the asymmetrical multiplayer experience. Say what you will about its previous games; each one offered entertaining tweaks to the formula, small yet clever innovations, and a seemingly better understanding of what makes this genre so compelling. Killer Klowns From Outer Space: The Game embodies all these aspects, making it one of IllFonic’s best asymmetric games yet.

Killer Klowns From Outer Space: The Game offers a familiar gameplay loop for the genre. Seven human players must quickly locate an escape route within a given environment, find its required tools – a gas can and spark plug for a motorboat, for example – and complete a series of skill checks to finally exit the map, all while being hunted by three Klown players. Humans are chased left and right as ominous giggles fill the air. Large popcorn-spewing guns prove to be as deadly as they are silly. Conspiracy nuts relay important information via ham radios. Matches start calmly enough before devolving into a hilariously chaotic mess.  

On their own, these typical gameplay mechanics would suffice. It’s what fans would expect from this type of game. What makes Killer Klowns From Outer Space stand out is how well it balances its competing roles, which is initially expressed through their inherent differences. The humans can loot around for weapons, helpful tools (like a compass that shows where a map’s exits are), and health/stamina-based items to gain an edge over their colorful pursuers. Their smaller size allows them to be quicker on their feet, sneak through windows, and hide relatively easily after breaking a Klown’s line of sight. And while taking on a Klown solo using the right weapons is possible, being a part of a larger group allows for more team-oriented tactics during a scuffle.

The Klowns, on the other hand, always pose an immediate threat. Not only are they usually sturdier than their human counterparts and have access to powerful abilities, but they also have time on their side; if the human players don’t escape within a 15-minute window, they’ll be caught up in an explosion dubbed the Klownpocalypse. Klown players can speed up this process by harvesting humans – i.e., zapping them with a ray gun until they’ve been encased in a cotton candy cocoon and then hooking them up to Lacky Generators scattered around the map – instead of outright killing them, ending the match prematurely.

This balancing of roles also extends to their varying objectives. The Klowns can cover exit routes with cotton candy that must be removed in order to interact with them. Humans need to take their time with most things, as failing a skill check or otherwise making noise will alert the Klowns to their whereabouts. That said, all hope isn’t lost if you’re caught out in the open, as death isn’t always permanent; humans can visit a resurrection machine, acting as a sub-objective, to bring their teammates back once per match.   

Killer Klowns From Outer Space has a ton of varied yet interconnected game mechanics that collectively succeed at keeping matches as fair as possible. I’m sure that’ll change as more players discover new strategies through prolonged play. But as of right now, no role dominates the other when playing with a full lobby, resulting in one of the most entertaining asymmetrical games I’ve ever played. It’s fun hunting down unsuspecting humans and bashing them into submission with a giant mallet. Using my particular Klown’s special abilities to close the gap on a fleeing victim is also a highlight; ramming folks with an invisible car or tracking them using a living balloon dog never gets old.

Likewise, finding new ways to elude pesky Klowns as a fleetfooted teen always got the blood pumping. Successfully completing a final skill check as the last living player while hearing the sound of big floppy shoes a few feet away is exhilarating. The same can be said of facing a Klown head-on with only one bullet left, knowing that if I missed their rubber nose (their primary weak spot), I would get a face full of deadly popcorn. And because my death was most likely brought upon by some whacky ability or weapon, I always found myself laughing at what happened over being frustrated.

The core gameplay isn’t the only appealing aspect of Killer Klowns From Outer Space. Visually, it’s a treat for movie fans as the vibrant ‘80s aesthetics permeate everything within its five well-designed maps. The humans look decent enough, especially after unlocking more cosmetic options. All five of the creepy-looking Klowns are impressive, though. It’s like they’ve been lifted right from the film the game is based on. I especially love their Klowntatities. These special finishing moves are cinematic, cutting to gamified versions of iconic moments from the movie, letting you and your foe act them out in the middle of a match.

Killer Klowns From Outer Space can be extremely entertaining at times. Unfortunately, it does have some glaring issues that keep it from reaching its true potential. There are plenty of bugs to contend with; glitching objectives, occasional crashes, and more plague what is otherwise a fun experience. 

IllFonic has announced plans to address many of the biggest issues I found while playing. However, even in its current state, aside from one bug that resulted in losing cosmetic unlock progress, the bugs I encountered weren’t egregious. Still, it’s worth noting that Killer Klowns from Outer Space still has plans to improve in these areas.

In its current state, Killer Klowns From Outer Space: The Game is a good asymmetrical multiplayer game. The gameplay mechanics that help balance the competitive roles reinforce the lessons IllFonic has learned over the years, while its comical nods to the film and impressive graphics showcase the respect given to the source material. If IllFonic can iron out the bugs in the coming patch and provide solid post-launch content, Killer Klowns From Outer Space could become the best this genre has to offer.
