Atmospheric observations in China show rise in emissions of a potent greenhouse gas
To achieve the aspirational goal of the Paris Agreement on climate change — limiting the increase in global average surface temperature to 1.5 degrees Celsius above preindustrial levels — will require its 196 signatories to dramatically reduce their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Those greenhouse gases differ widely in their global warming potential (GWP), or ability to absorb radiative energy and thereby warm the Earth’s surface. For example, measured over a 100-year period, the GWP of methane is about 28 times that of carbon dioxide (CO2), and the GWP of sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) is 24,300 times that of CO2, according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Sixth Assessment Report.
Used primarily in high-voltage electrical switchgear in electric power grids, SF6 is one of the most potent greenhouse gases on Earth. In the 21st century, atmospheric concentrations of SF6 have risen sharply along with global electric power demand, threatening the world’s efforts to stabilize the climate. This heightened demand for electric power is particularly pronounced in China, which has dominated the expansion of the global power industry in the past decade. Quantifying China’s contribution to global SF6 emissions — and pinpointing its sources in the country — could lead that nation to implement new measures to reduce them, and thereby reduce, if not eliminate, an impediment to the Paris Agreement’s aspirational goal.
To that end, a new study by researchers at the MIT Joint Program on the Science and Policy of Global Change, Fudan University, Peking University, University of Bristol, and Meteorological Observation Center of China Meteorological Administration determined total SF6 emissions in China over 2011-21 from atmospheric observations collected from nine stations within a Chinese network, including one station from the Advanced Global Atmospheric Gases Experiment (AGAGE) network. For comparison, global total emissions were determined from five globally distributed, relatively unpolluted “background” AGAGE stations, involving additional researchers from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography and CSIRO, Australia’s National Science Agency.
The researchers found that SF6 emissions in China almost doubled from 2.6 gigagrams (Gg) per year in 2011, when they accounted for 34 percent of global SF6 emissions, to 5.1 Gg per year in 2021, when they accounted for 57 percent of global total SF6 emissions. This increase from China over the 10-year period — some of it emerging from the country’s less-populated western regions — was larger than the global total SF6 emissions rise, highlighting the importance of lowering SF6 emissions from China in the future.
The open-access study, which appears in the journal Nature Communications, explores prospects for future SF6 emissions reduction in China.
“Adopting maintenance practices that minimize SF6 leakage rates or using SF6-free equipment or SF6 substitutes in the electric power grid will benefit greenhouse-gas mitigation in China,” says Minde An, a postdoc at the MIT Center for Global Change Science (CGCS) and the study’s lead author. “We see our findings as a first step in quantifying the problem and identifying how it can be addressed.”
Emissions of SF6 are expected to last more than 1,000 years in the atmosphere, raising the stakes for policymakers in China and around the world.
“Any increase in SF6 emissions this century will effectively alter our planet’s radiative budget — the balance between incoming energy from the sun and outgoing energy from the Earth — far beyond the multi-decadal time frame of current climate policies,” says MIT Joint Program and CGCS Director Ronald Prinn, a coauthor of the study. “So it’s imperative that China and all other nations take immediate action to reduce, and ultimately eliminate, their SF6 emissions.”
The study was supported by the National Key Research and Development Program of China and Shanghai B&R Joint Laboratory Project, the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration, and other funding agencies.

In the past year, what has caught your attention regarding AI and cyber security?
Hi and thanks for having me on CyberTalk! Looking back at 2023, I think the best word to describe it is wow!
As 2023 progressed, AI experienced huge developments, with breakthroughs in chatbots, large language models and in sectors like transportation, healthcare, content creation and too many others to mention!
We might say that ChatGPT was the on-ramp into AI for most people in 2023. Obviously, it evolved, got a lot of attention in the media for various reasons and now the the makers are trying to profit from it in different ways. Competition is also on the rise, with companies like Anthropic. We’ll see a lot more happening on the AI front in 2024.
When it comes to cyber security, we have seen a massive implementation of AI on both sides of the fence. It is now easier to become a cyber criminal than ever before, as AI-enabled tools are automated, easy to use and easy to rent (as-a-service).
One example is DarkGemini. It’s a powerful GenAI chatbot, being sold on the dark web for a monthly subscription. It can create malware, build a reverse shell, and do other bad things, solely based on a text prompt, and it will surely be further developed to introduce more features that attackers can leverage.
When wielded maliciously, AI becomes a catalyst for chaos. From the creation of deep fakes to intricate social engineering schemes, – like much more convincing phishing attempts and polymorphic malware resulting in continuously mutating threat code variants – these things pose a formidable challenge to current security tools.
Consequently, the balance of power may tip in favor of attackers, as traditional defense mechanisms struggle to adapt and counter these evolving threats.
Cyber attackers leveraging AI have the capacity to automate and quickly identify vulnerabilities for exploitation. Unlike current generic attacks, AI enables attackers to tailor their assaults to specific targets and scenarios, potentially leading to a surge in personalized and precisely targeted attacks. As the scale and precision of such attacks increase, it’s likely that we’ll witness a shift in attacker behaviors and strategies.
Implementing AI-based security that learns, adapts and improves, is critical in future-proofing against unknown attacks.
What new challenges and opportunities are you seeing? What has your experience working with clients been like?
New challenges in AI and cyber security include addressing the ethical implications of AI-driven security systems, ensuring the reliability and transparency of AI algorithms, and staying ahead of evolving cyber threats.
Regulation is important, and with the EU AI Act and AI Alliance, we are taking steps forward, but as of now, the laws are still miles behind AI development.
There are also opportunities to leverage AI for proactive threat hunting, automated incident response, and predictive analytics to better protect against cyber attacks.
Working with clients has involved assisting them in understanding the capabilities and limitations of AI in cyber security (and other areas) and helping them integrate AI-powered solutions effectively into their security strategies.
Have there been any new developments around ethical guidelines/standards for the ethical use of AI within cyber security?
Yes! Efforts to establish guidelines and standards for the ethical use of AI within cyber security are ongoing and gaining traction. Organizations such as IEEE and NIST are developing frameworks to promote responsible AI practices in cyber security, focusing on transparency, fairness, accountability, and privacy.
As mentioned, the AI Alliance is comprised of technology creators, developers and adopters working together to advance safe and responsible AI.
Also, to regulate the safe use of AI, the first parts of the very important AI Act have been passed in the European Union.
As a cyber security expert, what are your perspectives around the ethical use of AI within cyber security? How can organizations ensure transparency? How can they ensure that the AI isn’t manipulated by threat actors?
My perspectives on the ethical use of AI within cyber security (and all other fields for that matter) are rooted in the principles of transparency, fairness, accountability, and privacy.
While AI holds immense potential to bolster cyber security defenses and mitigate threats, it’s crucial to ensure that its deployment aligns with ethical considerations.
Transparency is key. Organizations must be transparent about how AI algorithms are developed, trained, and utilized in cyber security operations. This transparency fosters trust among stakeholders and enables scrutiny of AI systems.
Fairness is essential to prevent discrimination or bias in AI-driven decision-making processes. It’s imperative to address algorithmic biases that may perpetuate inequalities or disadvantage certain groups. Thoughtful design, rigorous testing, and ongoing monitoring are necessary to ensure fairness in AI applications.
Note: You can compare training an AI model as to raising a child into a responsible adult. It needs guidance and fostering and needs to learn from its mistakes along the way in order to become responsible and make the right decisions in the end.
Accountability is crucial for holding individuals and organizations responsible for the actions and decisions made by AI systems. Clear lines of accountability should be established to identify who is accountable for AI-related outcomes, including any errors or failures.
Accountability encourages responsible behavior and incentivizes adherence to ethical standards.
Privacy must be protected when using AI in cyber security. Organizations should prioritize the confidentiality and integrity of sensitive data, implementing robust security measures to prevent unauthorized access or misuse. AI algorithms should be designed with privacy-enhancing techniques to minimize the risk of data breaches or privacy violations. Their design should also take things like GDPR and PII into account.
Overall, ethical considerations should guide the development, deployment, and governance of AI in cyber security (and other fields leveraging AI).

Pepper Grinder Review – Short And Spicy – Game Informer
Sometimes, all it takes to get started on a great game is to come up with a compelling mechanic, and Pepper Grinder is a prime example. The titular grinder is as powerful as it is versatile, able to drill through the ground and power all sorts of wacky devices. The difficulty curve can be choppy, and ends more quickly than it should, but that core mechanic builds a sturdy foundation that kept me entertained from start to finish.
That core mechanic is, of course, the Grinder, a conical drilling device protagonist Pepper uses to burrow through terrain, spin switches, and defeat enemies. Level design is consistently clever, and I won’t spoil anything, but I was impressed by the number of uses the team found for a device that could easily get old quickly. That said, while popping in and out of dirt patches, swinging on grappling hooks, and boosting over gaps is fun, it’s not as easy as it looks.
Don’t let Pepper Grinder’s pixel art and cheery exterior fool you – this game can get tough, particularly in its platforming challenges. Some jumps need to be boosted at just the right time, and if you’re not ready for a certain grapple point to appear, you plummet to your death. The hardest levels are Pepper Grinder’s boss stages, thrilling battles that make creative use of the game’s mechanics. Because bosses have large health bars, these are tests of endurance, but despite that, they manage to maintain the game’s blisteringly fast pace. The arenas and the bosses themselves also look fantastic, showcasing developer Ahr Ech’s talent for pixel art at the highest degree.
While I enjoy being challenged, the difficulty sometimes frustrated me with its inconsistency, with one level killing me repeatedly and the next one flying by without harming me once. Dying against a tough boss was never an issue because their difficulty is well-forecasted and fitting, but some levels have difficult jump sequences or waves of enemies right before a checkpoint, which annoyed me when I had to try again and again. While there are a few reasons this can happen, it’s at least partially a symptom of the game’s length; including fewer levels makes it harder to smooth out the difficulty curve, resulting in spikes like this.
I’ve alluded to it a few times, but Pepper Grinder is a surprisingly short experience. It only took me three and a half hours to complete the main story and then another half hour or so to go back and collect enough coins to play the locked levels I’d skipped over. I don’t mind short games, but rolling credits on this one caught me off guard. There are plenty of ideas and mechanics that could have easily been expanded, and by extending the earlier part of the game, the difficulty spikes near the end likely wouldn’t be as frustrating.
That said, I do appreciate its efficiency. Ahr Ech had an idea for a platforming mechanic and iterated on it just enough to complete a story – there’s not a wasted moment in the entire playthrough, and that’s more than a lot of games can say. Pepper Grinder is a well-cooked meal – I just wish the portion was bigger.
And there are ways to spend more time with the game after defeating the final boss. In addition to a time attack mode, completionists will be glad to see five collectible skull coins in each level, though they’re worth collecting for more casual players, too. With 10, you can access a locked level in each world, and they’re some of the most enjoyable levels in the entire game, sometimes even introducing completely new mechanics. Skull coins can also be used to unlock hair and clothing colors, but I wish they were separate – it feels odd to choose between playing more of the game and changing my hair color. I recommend prioritizing level unlocks, but I won’t blame you for springing for the pink hair.
Pepper Grinder is an innovative indie experience, packed with tense battles, fluid platforming, and eye-catching visual design. While its short runtime left me wanting more, I’m happy with what it is: a bright action platformer that’s anything but a grind.
No Rest For The Wicked Developer Moon Studios On Why Remote Development Is Key To Its Success
No Rest for the Wicked is the upcoming action RPG from Moon Studios, the developer behind Ori and the Blind Forest/Will of the Wisps. It’s also the game gracing the latest cover of Game Informer. Cover story writer and editor Marcus Stewart and I traveled to Vienna, Austria, to play the game and speak with two of its leads, tech and production director and studio co-founder Gennadiy Korol and studio CEO and creative director Thomas Mahler.
However, while the frosted glass of the front door of the two-story apartment we entered was engraved with the words “Moon Studios”, this studio is actually just Mahler’s workplace. Korol met us in Vienna for the cover story, but he actually lives in Israel. The rest of Moon Studios lives around the world, because Moon Studios is completely remote – there is no headquarters to report to or central location to work.

While remote development has become more popular as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, Moon Studios has been remote since its founding in 2009. When I asked Korol and Mahler about remote development, it’s clear it’s a big part of the team’s winning game development formula, responsible for the aforementioned Ori games and the upcoming No Rest for the Wicked, which launches into Early Access on PC next month.
“We absolutely 100 percent believe it allows us to hire the best talent,” Mahler tells me. “I think for us, it was a little bit easier because we never knew anything else. We started as a remote studio. I do think it’s much harder if you’re at an established studio and you have established, proven processes that are all based on being in the office, and then now, suddenly, the world stops and you have to work remote but these processes […] you’re reliant on […] you have to be in the office for.
“I think that’s a really difficult change to make. That’s like changing the DNA of a studio, but we never had to do that.”

Mahler says he wouldn’t be in game development if not for the internet and, subsequently, remote work. He lives in Austria, and “there’s almost no [games industry] here.” But because of remote work, he was able to work at studios around the world. “I think that’s just amazing, right? That you can find all these people who are just amazingly talented, no matter where they live in the world, and if they’re super hungry, if they’re really passionate, if they’re willing to throw themselves in, then they can get a job in the games industry.”
He says studios that believe you have to work in the office for good work simply haven’t adapted yet. He hopes Moon Studios’ resume of games speaks to the idea that great products can come from remote studios. “I get this question a lot: ‘How did you make it look so coherent?’,” he says. “The workflow is exactly the same: people play the project, they play the build, they’re in touch with one another all the time. I don’t necessarily know why we need to sit in an open office space to achieve that.”
Korol, who attributes their belief in remote work to meeting Mahler on an online forum in 2004 before creating Moon Studios together in 2009, agrees.
“Some people blame certain things that don’t go right when people are working remotely on the fact that it’s remote work,” he says. “But I think it has to be a bit more nuanced. If you’re just trying to force a remote culture on top of the office approach, which is how a lot of these companies are structured, it’s not going to work. You have to kind of re-envision how the communication works, how the documentation works, how the work flow works, and what the big focus point is. I personally believe that remote work actually puts the emphasis on the product and the work even more than office work.”
Korol admits the team does miss out on the opportunity for water cooler moments, which he says can be fantastic moments, but Moon Studios does try to replicate them with streams, meet-ups, and more.
Korol points to a lack of commute, giving employees back more of their time, and the ability to be with family more easily as key factors for Moon Studios’ remote success.
“There’s no commute, so you don’t have to worry about wasting time,” he tells me. “Especially with people with families. We find it works really well for them because they can be with their kids. We’ve heard all these stories of people that say, ‘Oh, I had to ship this game, and I didn’t see my kid growing up, and I missed that precious period where I will never have that again, and my kid will never be that age again and it’s gone, and I was just so busy with work.’ But if you work remotely from home, you can still be there for your family and do great work.
“You can pace yourself much better, and you can take care of your mental health much better, so I’m a huge believer in [remote work.]”

Ultimately, Korol and Mahler, Moon Studios’ two leads, believe remote work is the most efficient process. Studios that aren’t remote are missing out on great talent for their games, they say.
“We believe it’s really ultimately the most efficient process if you do it right, if you hire for that, if you optimize all communication for that,” Korol adds. “And like with everything else, you also have to iterate. So if things go wrong, your first reaction shouldn’t be, ‘Oh, let’s bring everybody back to the office.’ The reaction should be, ‘Well, why isn’t it working? Can we fine-tune it? Can we tinker with it a little bit more?’ And I feel like maybe some people are jumping the gun a little bit too fast and are missing out on some opportunities with great talent.”
