1. Cloud-native security solutions. Unlike traditional security tools, cloud-native security solutions were built with the cloud in-mind. They’re designed to mitigate the specific risks associated with cloud-based infrastructure and services.

4. A Cloud Access Security Broker (CASB) implements zero trust access control and policy enforcement for cloud environments. Traffic to the cloud flows through the CASB solution, enabling it to enforce corporate security policies.

A CASB helps improve cloud visibility by offering insight into how users and applications access and utilize a given organization’s cloud-based applications. It can also provide insight into shadow IT, where the use of unapproved SaaS apps could lead to data leaks or other security threats.

A CASB can assist with data loss prevention (DLP), controlling access to and securing an organization’s cloud-based assets. Further, it offers advanced threat prevention (including the ability to identify and block the distribution of malware through cloud-based infrastructure) along with compliance advantages.

5. Secure Access Service Edge (SASE). With a distributed workforce and distributed applications, the traditional method of backhauling traffic to a centralized location for security scrubbing isn’t efficient.

SASE addresses the need for a centralized, cloud-delivered and software-defined security architecture; one that’s suited for highly distributed applications and users.

Critical components of SASE that are designed to protect your organization include Zero-Trust Network Access (ZTNA), SD-WAN, Security Service Edge (SSE) and Firewall-as-a-Service (FWaaS).

All traffic is routed to a point of presence for security inspection and is then optimally routed to its destination. In other words, SASE reduces complexity, improves performance, and advances security.

6. AI and ML powered threat detection and response. AI and ML algorithms excel when it comes to processing and analyzing vast quantities of data at speed and scale. In relation to cloud security, AI and ML enhance threat detection by identifying patterns and anomalies that are indicative of potential security risks.

Because these tools can discern subtle deviations from typical behavior, they enable early detection of emerging threats and keep organizations safer than traditional tools alone.

7. Big data threat intelligence. Leverage threat intelligence tools that aggregate and analyze millions of Indicators of Compromise (IoCs) everyday. When a threat is identified, protections/blocking capabilities can be deployed in under two seconds, with select tools.

8. Multi-factor authentication and credential rotation. To thwart threats in cloud environments, these simple and mainstream security measures are a must.

In the event that a password has been breached or stolen, multi-factor authentication can prevent unauthorized logins to cloud-based platforms, while routine credential rotations can reduce the window of opportunity for credential thieves.

Automated credential rotation processes can be integrated into security protocols, ensuring a seamless and timely rotation without undue operational disruption.

9. XDR. This trending solution type provides unified and integrated data visibility and analytics across an organization’s entire network – including the cloud. This enables security analysts to obtain context around incidents without having to learn and operate a variety of different platforms.

XDR is intended to provide a security team with full visibility into all endpoints and network infrastructure, allowing for unified remediation, improved understanding of attacks, and unified threat hunting.

10. CWPP. A Cloud Workload Protection Platform (CWPP) solution discovers workloads that exist within an organization’s cloud-based deployments and on-prem infrastructure. Once the workloads have been discovered, the solution provides a vulnerability scan.

Based on the results of the scan, CWPP solutions often provide options for mitigation. Fixes for identified issues include implementing allowlists, integrity protection and similar solutions.

In addition to addressing the security issues identified in the assessment, the CWPP can also provide protection against common security threats to cloud and on-premises workloads. These include runtime protection, malware detection and remediation and network segmentation.

A CWPP offers a number of benefits to organizations; from increased agility, to better security, to a reduction in data compliance violations.

Culturally informed design: Unearthing ingenuity where it always was

Pedro Reynolds-Cuéllar, an MIT PhD student in both media arts and sciences and art, culture, and technology (ACT), explores how technology and culture intersect in spaces often overlooked by mainstream society, stretching beyond the usual scope of design research.

A former lecturer and researcher at MIT D-Lab with experience in robotics, Reynolds-Cuéllar is an ACT Future Heritage Lab affiliate, a member of the Space Enabled Group within the MIT Media Lab, and a MAD Fellow who hails from rural Colombia, where resourcefulness isn’t a skill but a way of life. “I grew up seeing impressive ingenuity in solving a lot of problems, building contraptions, tools, and infrastructure … all sorts of things. Investigating this ingenuity has been the question driving my entire PhD,” he reflects.

Emphasizing the importance of cultural elements in how people collaborate, his work encourages a more localized, culturally informed perspective on technology design. “I am interested in investigating how technology takes place in geographies and spaces that are outside of mainstream society, mostly rural places,” he says.

At the heart of South America, Colombia is home to over 80 distinct groups of Indigenous tribes known to exist, each carrying unique customs, beliefs, and practices. This contributes to Colombia’s cultural mosaic and linguistic diversity, with more than 68 spoken languages. This meant plenty of opportunities for Reynolds-Cuéllar to engage with communities without trying to reshape or “fix” them, but rather to amplify their intrinsic strengths and amplify their voices.

“My colleagues and I developed a digital platform meticulously documenting collaborative processes when designing technology. This platform, called Retos, captures the invaluable social capital that blooms from these interactions,” Reynolds-Cuéllar explains. Born from a need to foster cross-pollination, the platform serves as a bridge between universities, companies, and rural Colombian organizations, enhancing their existing initiatives and facilitating processes such as funding applications. It received an award from MIT Solve and the 2022 MIT Prize for Open Data from MIT Libraries.

Designing with culture in mind

Reynolds-Cuéllar’s approach isn’t formulaic. “Culture is pivotal in shaping collaboration dynamics,” he emphasizes. “Reading about collaboration can make it seem like something universal, but I don’t think it works that way. This means common research methods are not always effective. You must ‘tune in,’ and build upon existing methods in the local fabric.” This understanding fuels Reynolds-Cuéllar’s work, allowing him to sculpt each project to resonate with a community’s distinct cultural context. At the heart of his doctoral research, he integrates Indigenous knowledge and what he calls “ancestral technology into design practices — a form of world-making (design) that primarily supports cultural cohesion, rooted in bounded geography and with a history that lives through collective memory. “I’m prompting designers, who may lack direct access to Indigenous scholarship, to recalibrate their design approaches,” Reynolds-Cuéllar articulates.

This appeal to look into multiple perspectives and methodologies broadens the horizons of conventional design thinking. Beyond designing things for a specific function or solution, Reynolds-Cuéllar looks at practices that also help maintain the cultural fabric of a place. He gives the example of weaving looms, which are not only the result of ingenious design, but also allow Indigenous communities to build artifacts with great cultural meaning and economic benefit: “When I work on the loom … I feel differently. I have access to a different state of mind and can easily get into a flow. I am building things where I can tell the story of my life within my culture. I’m making something that is meaningful for people around me, and I’m not doing it alone, we’re doing it all together,” adds Reynolds-Cuéllar.

Among his ventures, Reynolds-Cuéllar’s work with coffee farmers stands out. His projects in collaboration with these communities are all about empowering coffee farmers to refine their processes and gain agency over their livelihood and economic undertakings.

“The coffee industry in Colombia is intricate, with various layers influencing farmers’ lives, from bioengineered seeds to chemical fertilizers, and centralized roasting operations. It’s political and even philosophical,” Reynolds-Cuéllar states. Coffee farmers could sell the raw beans for a low price to the powerful Federación Nacional de Cafeteros (the National Federation of Coffee Growers of Colombia), but there are other alternatives to foster agency and self-determination. “We collaborate with coffee growing collectives, helping them to achieve consistency in roasting procedures, improve equipment designs, and set up packaging infrastructure,” which means farmers can produce higher-value specialty coffee which they can choose to sell directly to consumers. Reynolds-Cuéllar’s work creates ripple effects, bolstering autonomy and local economies.

Too many questions

Throughout his research, Reynolds-Cuéllar describes a turning point in meeting an Indigenous cultural and social leader: “We were collaborating with a group of fishermen on Colombia’s Atlantic coast, within an Indigenous community. Our initial curriculum mirrored conventional design methods. Yet, the leader’s insight shifted my perspective profoundly. It was the first time my methods were being challenged.” The encounter prompted Reynolds-Cuéllar to scrutinize his methodology: “This leader told me: ‘You guys ask a lot of questions.’ I started explaining the benefit of questions, and methods in the usual design jargon. He replied: ‘I still think you ask too many questions. We ask the most important questions, and then we spend a lot of time reflecting on them,” remembers Reynolds-Cuéllar. This shift underscored the realization that there is no such thing as universal design, and that standardized methodologies don’t universally translate. They sometimes inadvertently strip away cultural nuances, where they could instead cultivate their dynamic expression.

For Reynolds-Cuéllar, his participation in MAD’s design fellowship has been instrumental. The fellowship not only provided essential funding but also offered a sense of community. “The fellowship facilitated meaningful conversations, especially talks like Dori Tunstall’s on ‘Decolonizing Design,’” Reynolds-Cuéllar reflects. The financial support also translated into practical aid, allowing him to advance his projects, including compensating field researchers in Colombia.

Beyond academic pursuits, Reynolds-Cuéllar envisions writing a book titled “The Atlas of Ancestral Technology of Colombia.” More than mere documentation, this large atlas format would be a compendium of the myriad stories Reynolds-Cuéllar has unearthed, with illustrating images crafted in Colombia — visual representations from each culture, descriptions, and local stories about these artifacts. “I want a book that could counter some of the predominant narratives on design,” asserts Reynolds-Cuéllar. Through his work, Reynolds-Cuéllar already started to craft a blueprint for approaching design with cultural significance and intention, laying the foundation for a more inclusive and purposeful approach to technology and innovation.

WordPress.com to Offer Tweet Rebuttals

2023 was an eventful year for WordPress – and not all of it was positive. Then again, a little #WPDrama is a fine spectator sport.

The divide between co-founder Matt Mullenweg’s commercial venture (Automattic) and the open-source project once again raised some eyebrows. The (supposed) problem? Automattic’s WordPress.com replicated plugin listings from the WordPress.org repository on its site.

Plugin developers expressed concern that the commercial site’s listings showed up first in search results. Mullenweg was personally called out regarding the issue. The criticism was harsh and accusatory.

He responded aggressively – even banning a member of the open-source project’s marketing team on Twitter/X.

Right or wrong, these events got the WordPress community talking. The level of discourse was palpable.

It also got my predictive senses tingling. There must be a way to capitalize on this phenomenon – right?

Apple Will Thrill Fans with AI

Rumors abound that Apple is working on an artificial intelligence platform. How might it work? What are its capabilities? I have a few predictions.

A Stiff Barrier to Entry

Apple loves to sell us premium products. And they also enjoy exercising tight control of them. Don’t expect their AI offering to be any different.

Thus, their platform will only be available to those using Apple devices. But that’s not all. Adding Apple’s AI to your workflow will also require a proprietary cable. No, not the one you already have.

We’re talking about a completely new connector type. The good news is that it’s currently hidden on your device. It will reveal itself upon sensing the cable’s presence.

The bad news? The dongle costs $500. And customers will have to wait at least six months for delivery. As usual, a large number of preorders will be the culprit.

An AI Powered Website Testing Suite

Web designers will be thrilled to see Apple’s AI testing suite. Enter your URL and watch the magic happen.

The tool emulates multiple devices. For example, you can troubleshoot your client’s buggy site on their 8-year-old Android phone. Or figure out why your responsive styles aren’t working on a brand of tablet no one has heard of.

You can also test your sites on classic Apple devices. How would an Apple IIe render your home page? What about a Newton handheld? You’re a dongle away from finding out.

It Will Be a Roller-Coaster Year for Elon Musk

Perhaps you don’t need a crystal ball to predict some things. Elon Musk and chaos are the perfect couple (sorry, Grimes). It’s the gift that keeps on giving.

I believe Mr. Musk will have a busy year. Seriously, there will be something wild happening every day. Here are just a few examples:

  • Musk will reveal (unprompted) that he ingested dozens of “E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial” cartridges. You know, the ones that Atari buried back in the 1980s. He may still have a stash in his basement.
  • Musk will invent an implantable microchip that allows chickens to speak. Ironically, he’ll call it “Twitter“.
  • What about the service formerly known as Twitter? Musk hasn’t forgotten about it. He’ll continue to reinstate banned accounts. Next up: Napolean. Watch out for a rant hundreds of years in the making.
  • We hear the Tesla Cybertruck will finally start deliveries in 2024. What’s the catch? It only includes models that come equipped with a Musk-approved flamethrower.
  • Tesla’s Autopilot feature is having issues. Musk will replace it with an “Autonag” option. A virtual Elon will criticize your driving skills and shout them through the car’s audio system. Transport will never be the same.

Who wouldn't want Elon Musk to criticize their driving skills?

Best Wishes for 2024!

Yes, the predictions above are silly. But they underscore that we’re in a time of change. AI is disrupting our industry. The tools we use are evolving. Somehow, we’ll need to adapt. For instance, I may have ChatGPT write this article for me next year.

None of this will be easy. Web designers have weathered plenty of shifts, though. I’m still here – and so are you!

So, take a deep breath. Find something to laugh about. And do your best to make 2024 a great year.

Prince Of Persia: The Lost Crown – Time Is An Ocean In A Storm

Introduction

Beginning in 1989, the Prince of Persia series enjoyed consistent attention, with its longest break between releases being six years between Prince of Persia 2: The Shadow and the Flame and the better-left forgotten Prince of Persia 3D. 2003’s Sands of Time and its two sequels marked a new era for Prince and, in many ways, laid the foundation for Ubisoft’s most successful franchise, Assassin’s Creed. The 2008 Prince of Persia reboot didn’t reignite the series as Ubisoft had hoped, and 2010’s Forgotten Sands felt closer to a movie tie-in than a new, proper entry.

That game’s subtitle would end up being a portend of the future as the series seemed inexplicably lost to time. Though not completely ignored, thanks to the occasional cameo in other Ubisoft games and underplayed mobile releases, we will have gone 13 years without a new Prince of Persia game by the time The Lost Crown is released early next year. We’re well overdue for another chance to explore a Persian location with our impressive parkour skills. We may not have expected the series to go back to its 2D roots for its triumphant return, but based on our discussions with developer Ubisoft Montpellier and playing the game’s first three and a half hours, it may be precisely what we need.

The Sands of Time

“I think you should ask [Ubisoft CEO] Yves Guillemot,” says game director Mounir Radi with a laugh when I ask why we’ve had to wait so long for a new Prince of Persia. He genuinely doesn’t have an answer to the question, but his excitement at finally being able to bring the series back is evident.

The Lost Crown wasnʼt an assignment that came down on high from Ubisoft but was instead directed by the team Radi helped put together for the game.

“It’s fully us. It’s not a command,” Radi says.

The moment just happened to be right. The people Radi wanted on the team with applicable skills like expertise in platforming and world-building were finally available within Ubisoft.

“I didn’t want to do any Prince of Persia that I wouldn’t be proud of,” senior producer Abdelhak Elguess says, also citing having the right people be available at the right time be a major factor.

Once the team was assembled it took some time to decide in what direction the team wanted to go. Development began in 2019, which means pending any unforeseen delays, the game has been in development for almost five years.

“It was not 2D from the start,” Radi says. “I had the chance to work on some prototypes in 2D, but before going into it, we studied the Prince of Persia series, just to be sure we understand all the legacy.”

That effort meant researching what fans liked about Prince of Persia in all its forms. The team tried to emotionally detach itself from the franchise and focus analytically on what players might want from a new entry. Radi himself is a longtime fan of the series, predating its move to 3D movement, and hoped, specifically, to recall the tone of the original but with a contemporary lens. “I wanted to have a callback to the fear and isolation that I had when I was playing the 2D games,” he says. “And to also push a lot of experimentation with the aspect of the time powers.” That goal of isolation and fear naturally fit into the “Metroidvania” mold – a term Radi offers to describe the game without hesitation. After playing, I understand why. If you liked the structure of 2021’s Metroid Dread, then you should absolutely be paying attention to The Lost Crown.

That isnʼt to say that Prince of Persia’s excellent 3D iterations won’t have representation. Radi is quick to compliment Sands of Time, and the team is doing everything within its abilities to ensure that moving back to 2D does not feel like a regression.

Warrior Within

Previous Prince of Persia games being an influence on The Lost Crown admittedly goes without saying. To make a new Prince of Persia game without reverence to what came before would be a disservice to the longtime fans. But plenty of other games, and even entire genres, are serving as an influence for this new era of Prince of Persia, too. “Maybe you have heard that I am a big fan of fighting games?” Radi asks. “They achieve, I think, in the right way, the spectacular aspects of 2D action. I wanted to bring this to the screen.” Fighting games can scare away some, however, with their complicated inputs and focus on educating players for some time before they feel they have a grasp on the action. “I understand that when talking about certain [fighting] games it can sound like complexity, but this is not that for me,” Radi says. He cites games like Smash Bros. and Street Fighter that have a “super elegant” one attack, one function approach. “I wanted to take some aspect of the fighting games and make them much more straightforward.”

Only speaking to Radi, I was unclear of exactly what he meant, but getting hands-on with the game, I have a much better feeling for how protagonist Sargon (who notably is not a Prince) attacks a little bit like a fighting game character. You do not perform combos with your swords by memorizing button patterns. You only use one button for sword attacks, but I was much more thoughtful about attacking enemies against walls and dashing into an attack to kick enemies into the air and bring the fight to the sky. It’s also worth noting that the combat is very fast and very fun. Counters play an essential role and Sargon makes big sweeping attacks with his dual swords that feel great. I also like the focus on positioning and sliding under enemy legs or jumping over them to get the best angle of attack instead of unlocking button patterns. It made every encounter feel seamless and thoughtful. You also build up a meter to unleash a devastating special attack that is very important to manage, especially during boss fights.

Alongside Radi’s fighting game interest comes expertise from some of the best platform designers in the industry. Much of The Lost Crown’s team worked on Rayman Origins and Legends, and the main lesson from those games the team is applying here is a sense of musicality and rhythm in platforming – though you shouldn’t expect any rhythm levels like the ones seen in Rayman Legends. “For me, and for a lot of people on the team, the action on-screen is music,” Radi says. “When you work on a game such as Rayman, you learn how to convey this aspect into gameplay.” Radi adds that when the team talks about how it wants the player to make Sargon bounce between walls or sprint through an area, it find itself gesticulating as if conducting in rhythm. Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown is quite different from Rayman, but in my time playing, I can feel the lessons learned from those games applied here.

Typically, in preview opportunities where we get to play a game ahead of release, we’re dropped into the middle. This way, we avoid spoilers and early lengthy tutorials to, ideally, get a sense of a game when a player has already spent some time understanding how it plays. Perhaps as a show of confidence, Ubisoft let me play from the very beginning and then what felt like a significant way into the story. I won’t spoil its biggest narrative surprises, but it did not take long for its hooks to be fully planted to the point I was disappointed I had to stop. Iʼll be more than happy to replay the game’s opening hours again in January.

Before even starting, I changed the spoken language to Farsi (Persian in the game’s settings), which will be an option at the game’s launch. There are also difficulty options and Guided and Exploration modes. The former offers more map guidance for those who don’t like getting lost, while the latter gives fewer player hints. The game begins on a battlefield with Persia defending itself from the Kushans, warriors from the east. Hope seems lost until The Immortals appear – seven ultra-powerful warriors with magical abilities who quickly turn the tide of battle.

The player controls Sargon, the youngest of The Immortals. The team drops into battle like a bomb, taking out swaths of the competing army at once. The game’s opening teaches you how to play as Sargon while the six other Immortals fight beside you. They are all unique, with specific designs, silhouettes, abilities, and personalities. This first area also introduces you to Sargon’s teacher, Anahita, who is not a member of The Immortals but also appears to be a skilled warrior.

Making my way through the battlefield is straightforward. I won’t have a Metroid-style map until later. I learn how to jump on walls, use basic attacks, and when to counter. This tutorial area ends with a fight against General Uvishka, the leader of the Kushans, who is twice as big as Sargon and mounted on a horse. The battle is difficult, and it takes me multiple attempts. Appropriate counters are critical, as is making sure I use my health potion at the right time, which I later learn refills at every checkpoint, like Dark Souls. Defeating General Uvishka strikes the right balance of challenge and satisfaction. He kills me a handful of times, but I never felt like I couldn’t beat him in my encounters.

With the bombastic opening out of the way, itʼs time to better understand who Sargon is and what is happening in this world. Sargon’s Immortals peers are impressed by his skill. Their relationship with him is one of proud teachers. They let him take on General Uvishka so he could finally get some recognition after all their teachings. The Persian Queen Thomyris awards Sargon a blue sash for his substantial efforts, which makes him look a little like the Prince from Sands of Time.

However, the most important character we meet is Prince Ghassan, the reluctant royal who is technically the titular Prince of Persia. He suggests meeting Sargon under more casual circumstances in the future. Sargon meets with the other Immortals to share in their victory, but the moment of respite is short. The kingdom is attacked, seemingly from the inside, and Prince Ghassan is kidnapped. Sargon rushes after him to discover that Anahita, Sargon’s teacher, is taking Prince Ghassan, and she seems to be more powerful than she let on. This leads Sargon and The Immortals to chase and follow Anahita and Ghassan to the mystical Mount Qaf, former home of the god of time, where The Lost Crown takes place.

Mount Qaf is a dangerous, magical place that people explore at their own risk. Those who go there do not seem to return, but The Immortals are loyal and enter without question to save their prince. It does not take long for things to go wrong. The Immortals break into groups and begin looking for Ghassan, but Sargon is on his own. The Lost Crown begins to take on a familiar, Metroid-inspired structure. Multiple paths make themselves apparent, but most require a new ability. The Immortals also come across a recognizable decomposing soldier who looks like they have been dead for years, even though they are confident they would have only arrived a few hours ago.

A path of floating leaves directs me to a Wak-Wak tree, which I learn is the recurring save spot that appears throughout the game. A young girl named Fariba appears from the corner, claiming she has been here for years and knows everything about Mount Qaf. She is surprisingly cavalier about the whole situation and is entirely unimpressed by Sargon being a member of The Immortals. She gives Sargon the Eye of the Wanderer and a map that is more than it first appears.

Using the map, players can leverage a mechanic called Memory Shards. At any moment, you can press down on the d-pad to take a picture of your surroundings, automatically marking the map with a photo. I love this feature and frequently take advantage. It’s the equivalent of making notes on your map. If a ledge was too high, I took a picture of it to note that I probably needed some kind of double jump before I could progress there. I did the same for odd-colored doors or other comparable hurdles I knew I was not yet ready to overcome.

As I continue exploring, I run into members of The Immortals, but everyone has strange stories. I have only been playing for about 30 minutes, which Sargon seems to be experiencing in real-time, but some members say they have been exploring for days. I find one exhausted soldier who isn’t a member of The Immortals who claims they have been there for years. The strangest moment is when I find a dead body resembling Sargon with one of The Immortals’ unique weapons, Monolias’ bow. I take the bow from the body, grateful for the new weapon, but then run into Monolias later in the game. He still has his bow, meaning a different version of him and his bow must have existed. Time moves strangely on Mount Qaf, which is thematically consistent for Prince of Persia. The games have always had an element of time, whether it was the hour-long timer of the first game or the ability to rewind time in Sands of Time.

I eventually find Anahita and Prince Ghassan and manage to follow them, but not before encountering Kaheva, a true immortal, surviving god, who offers to upgrade my equipment. I also fight Jahandar, a winged lion with a scorpion tale. Like General Uvishka, Jahandar makes for a challenging but rewarding boss fight.

To delve more into the story would enter the world of spoilers, but I will tease that I was very surprised at some of the revelations I encountered about Sargon, Prince Ghassan, Anahita, and members of The Immortals – and that was only in the first three hours of what Ubisoft is estimating to be a 25-hour game. I explored a library filled with alchemists who seemed to be different versions of the same person and only some of them attacked. I discovered a forest filled with mushroom platforms, and even ended up in the sewage-soaked depths where an old man stole my map and demanded I chase him. I also got an exclusive early look at an area called The Pit of Eternal Sands.

I was not able to play in the Pit of Eternal Sands, but I did get to see some hands-off gameplay of the location, which revealed new time-bending mechanics. This area is arguably the one most inspired by Sands of Time. Along with the pit being full of sand, everything in this area of Mount Qaf is in reverse. Sargon rides giant waterfalls of sand that are climbing upward, and even enemies move in reverse. When you kill them, you see their spawn animations, and when they come to life to attack, you actually see their death animations. “These are the kinds of things we wanted to do to toy with and surprise our player,” Radi says. “Sometimes, these time anomalies are depicted thematically. Sometimes they have a real impact on gameplay.”

Footage from The Pit of Eternal Sands also showcased Azdaha, an imposing gigantic cobra boss fight. Like the boss battles I played myself, Azdaha looks challenging, but also the kind of boss that clearly communicates its intentions, which makes it easy to blame yourself for failure rather than the game. In the boss fight, Sargon used a time manipulation ability I was not able to use myself, where he would execute a jump and a mid-air dash but then rewind time to give himself another opportunity to jump in mid-air. Sargon used the ability to get himself out of Azdaha’s way, but I also saw him use it while exploring to make disappeared platforms reappear and give himself more time in the air. The mid-air dash Sargon used extensively here also directly references Sands of Time’s wall running ability. Sargon can use it without the aid of a wall, but the animation looks almost identical to the 2003 game’s animation in a fun, referential way.

I have a lot of affection for Sands of Time. It was the kind of game I fell in love with so thoroughly that I was disappointed I couldn’t run along walls or rewind time when I played subsequent games. The story also felt unique in ways that have become standard. Allowing characters to develop by having personal conversations not necessarily related to the task at hand was uncommon, but the Prince and Farah would do things like discuss their favorite fruit, and the romance that developed over the course of the game felt earned. I played every follow-up sequel and am so grateful the series is finally making a return.

Metroid was not the inspiration I expected to influence the next Prince of Persia, but spending hours with the game has convinced me it is an excellent fit. I am already invested in Sargon and The Immortals, eager to see what happens next in the story, and equally excited to see what abilities will develop over the rest of the game. We are well overdue for Prince of Persia’s return, and while I was always hopeful a new entry would be worth the wait, after playing the game, I have confidence it will be.

Papers, Please: 10 Years Later

Before we read and wrote, we moved. Stories of people moving – migrating – have been told since time immemorial. The Mexica journey to central Mexico; Moses leading the Jewish people across the desert; the founding of Rome – as told by Virgil – by those that fled the fall of Troy. Unsurprisingly, then, video games also tell stories of migration. On August 8, 2013, game designer Lucas Pope, the man behind the studio 3909, released Papers, Please, a game about managing migration.

Papers, Please, subtitled “A Dystopian Document Thriller,” was for some the first time they played a game whose core design ethos challenged their worldviews and understanding. Other games have placed the topic of migration front and center. Path Out (Causa Creations, 2014), an adventure game that retells the journey of Abdullah Karam, a young Syrian artist who escapes the country’s decade-long civil war in 2014; and Escape from Woomera (2003), a game about a refugee, Mustafa, stuck in the infamous Woomera Immigration Reception and Processing Centre in South Australia, are two stand-outs. Papers, Please tackles the subject from a different perspective. You play an inspector examining documents, determining whether a person can enter the fictional country of Arstotzka.

A decade after its release, the bureaucratic nightmare in Papers, Please is an increasing reality for many around the world. We see this on the news: anguished faces looking for prospects either fleeing war, environmental catastrophe, or lack of economic and social opportunities. According to the Migration Policy Institute, at the end of 2022, over 100 million people were displaced globally. Along with revisiting Papers, Please, I interviewed Pope for his perspective on the game 10 years on. I also talked to former United States diplomat Josef Burton, who worked in several consulates and embassies around the world processing visa applications, for his thoughts on the game.

Papers, Please is an odd commercial success. According to Pope, the indie game sold over five million copies across all platforms between August 8, 2013 and August 8, 2023. It also received numerous awards and acclaim from players and critics alike. It’s one of only 36 video games in the Museum of Modern Art’s permanent collection, alongside Tetris, Street Fighter II, and Portal. Pope feels he owes his career to the game. “It’s hard to look back and be anything but proud of it,” he says. “It’s not perfect, and maintaining it for 10 years gave me a good look at that, but I still consider it my best work so far.” High praise considering Pope also released the critically acclaimed Return of the Obra Dinn in 2018.

The game’s visuals and themes are heavily influenced by the last decade of the Cold War. Its story shares much in common with the books of John le Carré, where spies – really just bureaucrats – are placed in impossible situations within geo-political struggles with grand implications. Most don’t survive. If they do, the price paid for completing their work is often too high. The same is true of The Inspector in Papers, Please. The game turns the player into a villain or anti-hero.

At the beginning of the game, progress depends on how well you follow a handbook of rules and regulations created by Arstotzka’s Ministry of Admission. As you play, the work of Custom and Border Protection officials stops being an abstraction. Players must protect the border and not allow those unauthorized by the Arstotzka’s Ministry of Admission to enter; thus, you make cold and crucial determinations about people’s futures. This sort of determination is made every day across borders all over the real world.

Migration stories are enthralling. Migrants, refugees, and asylees are – in the sincerest sense of the word – the first entrepreneurs. Papers, Please is an important game because it contextualizes the broader issues relating to migration enforcement in a visceral and tangible way. The point is not to moralize but to tell a story via interactive means. Players who can stomach playing as the inspector get a view of Pope’s vision of a dystopian altered reality inspired by former Communist Bloc nations.

Burton has mixed feelings about the game and its portrayal of immigration control. “The fantasy of Papers, Please is brutal because you’re this inhuman bureaucrat,” he says. “There’s this plotting, droning music […] and there is this dystopic kind of feeling like in the first level of Half-Life 2. You’re like, ‘No, absolutely not! Let’s examine your papers. You don’t have enough papers.’ I think that we’ve departed from that. What I would take away from my time at the State Department, in the Foreign Service, and in Consular Affairs is that it’s much more insidious than you would think. In seven and a half years, I only caught one person based on just documents. And that case was a really sloppy attempt at identity theft.”

Pope does not claim that Papers, Please represents the complexities of international immigration policy “in anything other than a vastly simplified way.” Ultimately, he chose to highlight “some of the bigger talking points, and there are hints of real-world associations, but to keep things flexible, I figured it was best to not follow reality too closely.”

Looking back, Pope adds, “When I made the game in 2013, immigration as a topic was in the news but felt to me like an issue that had made some recent progress and was on track to get better. Unfortunately, that was all an illusion – the situation for immigrants and refugees has only gotten worse since then. In a perfect world, the game would’ve fallen out of relevance immediately, and we wouldn’t be talking about it anymore.”

Papers, Please is a Cold War tale. When I first played the game, the opening lyrics of Yellow Magic Orchestra’s song “Ballet” played in my head. “Turning faded pages…She was a refugee from across the wall. Acting out a story written in Air.” You turn a lot of paper in the game. You also can’t help but make up stories about each person who appears at your window to present their passports and other documents.

For Pope, the entire premise was “…mostly inspired by the mechanical side of the game’s design. Just moving the papers around was fun for me personally, and so I did my best to build on that. What kinds of things would a resource-limited border inspector see? How would they be expected to react? How can these activities be turned into interesting things for the player to do? The concept and setting were enough to keep the ideas coming until I felt like I had a whole game.”

The earnestness of Papers, Please, overwhelms players. Waiting in line to be interviewed by an immigration official brings with it a feeling of uncertainty, maybe even insecurity. Readers of the German sociologist Max Weber might be familiar with how bureaucracy is dehumanizing by design. It must be impersonal to function at a large scale. Welcome to the machine. Pope doesn’t take this aspect of the system for granted.

Papers, Please forces players to make unethical decisions. I asked Pope what the gameplay loop at the heart of the game says about migration and border control. He responded, “Something I tried to capture in the game is the dehumanizing aspect of bureaucracy. I think border control is a good example of how rules made in one place in response to a political issue really look when they reach the actual people that enforce them and the people that are affected by them. Those bureaucracy-driven elements were convenient for the design too, where rules can change from day to day arbitrarily to ratchet up the pressure or direct the story.”

Oh, and how they change!

The narrative design and gameplay in Papers, Please are at the zeitgeist of an epoch-defining trend: mass migration and increased border enforcement. The decade following Papers, Please has had a whirlwind of immigration policy changes and practices worldwide. Just this year alone in the United States, we witnessed the end of Title 42 (pandemic-era immigration restrictions in the United States), a backlog of over one million asylum applications as of May 2023, overworked staff, and a sharp increase in student visa denials. Globally, people are leaving their homes. Spurred by large-scale armed conflicts, economic devastation, climate change, and the hope of opportunity, rationally, people migrate. We haven’t seen migration at this scale since the Second World War. Imagine being the inspector in Papers, Please and processing immigration claims by people on the Southern border of the United States or in Eastern Europe processing Ukrainian refugees at the Polish border.

Pope spoke about players telling him “…that the game reflected their experience immigrating from one place to another and the complications they faced. All horror stories, basically.” The bureaucratic work players are tasked with in Papers, Please is not dissimilar from that performed by Customs and Border Patrol, specifically before the creation of the Asylum Corps (a cadre of officers trained to review and adjudicate domestic refugee processing) in 1991. In its inception, the Asylum Corps was predominantly composed of individuals trained in immigration law. Before the Asylum Corps’ creation, it was the job of border inspectors to adjudicate asylum claims on top of their other duties. Asylees are the ones who would fall under the purview of the inspector in Papers, Please, as these individuals have to present themselves at a legal port of entry and state their claim to asylum.

Papers, Please gamifies the process of policing migration. Yet, one key distinction between migration processing in Papers, Please, and our contemporary world is how borders now operate as extended zones, often outside the specific national border itself. Burton shared his insights on this matter. “Borders as a larger expanded geographical defuse area is a super recent phenomenon,” he says. “We are talking about 15 to 20 years ago. For example, the U.S. Customs and Board Agency starts functioning as far south as Peru. The U.S. border really starts at the Guatemala-Mexico border. The border with Europe starts in Mali, in Niger, in Burkina Faso, and moves through to the Mediterranean by the time you need border officials.”

As previously noted by Pope, this and other trends and procedures relating to migration are not covered by Papers, Please. The game offers an overly simplified version of migration control, both to the game’s benefit and to its detriment. It is not a complete or accurate depiction of the lived experiences of migrants and asylum-seekers. Also, deeply coloring its perspectives are older and now largely defunct ways in which destination countries (places where immigrants would like to ultimately reside) process migrants at their borders.

Burton sees Papers, Please as “…almost like a replay of the 20th century’s ideas about borders. Which I think are shaped by, and the policy imperatives come by, the testimonies of all the people in Europe after the Second World War of the idea of being at the border and not being allowed in. Well, in the present day, you are not even going to get to the border. You already go through a period of scrutiny [before arriving at the country of destination] […] I had a pretty unique experience where I was the guy saying ‘no,’ but usually as part of an extremely diffuse process. I also think that it’s interesting that Papers, Please is set in an environment in what I guess you’ll call ‘real existing socialism.’ It’s clearly supposed to be in a Romania or Albania kind of analog. In a hyper isolated kind of independent eastern European communist country.” These kinds of “isolated” countries are rarer today.

Papers, Please is a towering achievement, regardless of how its mechnaics and view of migration differ from reality. Few games are as bold and interweave narrative and gameplay so succinctly. The game’s themes are malleable to the specific societal context that the player brings. Routinely, it’s used by academics in classrooms and continues to captivate players looking for more than just a few hours of entertainment.

A decade after its release, Papers, Please stands as a singular vision that is myopic, bleak, and unflinching. It is also riveting. The game is an example of Pope’s strong belief in the power of interactive media to build empathy. According to Pope, “If Papers, Please can raise awareness about these issues, then I’m very happy. I think a fundamental problem with understanding migration is that the topic is so distant from most people’s comfortable daily experience. Having the situations and challenges right up in your face, subject to your choices can hopefully encourage more empathetic ways to think about them.”
