Is open source under siege? – CyberTalk

Is open source under siege? – CyberTalk

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:

The recent discovery of a backdoor in XZ Utils, a core compression utility embedded in countless Linux systems, has sent shockwaves through the cyber security community.

As journalist Kevin Roose of the New York Times pointed out in relation to the XZ Utils fiasco, in some places, the internet is held together by the digital equivalent of bubble gum and Scotch tape, and the inherent fragility is a draw for cyber criminals.

According to today’s joint alert issued by the Open Source Security Foundation (OpenSSF) and the OpenJS Foundation, the XZ Utils breach might not be an isolated incident.

Beyond XZ Utils: Broader concerns

The open source community has reported that at least three separate JavaScript projects have been targeted by unknown individuals.

While the details surrounding these projects remain scarce, the involvement of the OpenJS Foundation, a key player in fostering the development of popular JavaScript tools, noted that these projects underpin a significant portion of the modern web.

According to the alert, the attackers made suspicious update demands or requested admin access, indicating deliberate attempts to manipulate or gain control over these specific projects.

The growing threat landscape for OSS

Open source software (OSS) has been a driving force behind technological innovation. Yet, a single compromised project, especially one as widely used as XZ Utils, can have a ripple effect, impacting countless users and downstream applications.

The targeting of XZ Utils, and now JavaScript projects, highlights the level of vulnerability within the open source software development landscape.

The need for a multi-pronged approach

The recent incidents underscore the need for a multi-layered approach to securing minimally maintained open source projects. Here are key areas of focus:

  • Generally fortifying OSS security. The open source community needs to prioritize more intensive security measures, such as stricter code review processes, the adoption of secure coding practices, the development of stronger tools for vulnerability detection…etc. In addition, increased funding for open source initiatives is warranted in order to better secure under-resourced projects.
  • Collaboration and intelligence sharing. It might sound trite, but effective collaboration and communication between software developers, security researchers and government agencies can make a huge difference in threat prevention. Shared intelligence allows for a more coordinated response to any threats that arise.
  • AI-based tools. For example, Check Point’s Infinity AI capabilities can assist with securing open source code. Infinity can integrate with existing code scanning tools to perform static code analyses. In addition, its AI engines can analyze code for known vulnerabilities and potential weaknesses beyond simple syntax errors, identifying patterns indicative of backdoor insertions (like that used in the XZ Utils case).

A call to action for CISOs

The recent open source attacks also mean that CISOs and cyber security professionals must further enhance code-related security protection. Within individual organizations, CISOs should ensure that development teams are using secure coding practices; secure design, code reviews and testing.

CISOs can also integrate security into the software development lifecycle by performing regular software security assessments (static analysis, dynamic testing…etc). And there are many other ways in which CISOs can ensure the security of software – get more insights here.

Star Wars Outlaws Preview – Meet Kay And Nix – Game Informer

As you navigate the galaxy in Star Wars Outlaws, you do so as Kay Vess, a pickpocket-turned-thief who gets in over her head and winds up with a bounty on her head. Early in conversations, Lucasfilm Games and developer Massive Entertainment agreed that telling a scoundrel story was the way to go. Through these discussions, Massive decided it wanted to portray a “resourceful underdog” for its main character rather than the trained soldiers that star in The Division.

A Scoundrel Experience

In the various meetings with Lucasfilm Games, Massive Entertainment looked at the various archetypes available to players in the Star Wars tabletop RPGs, including Jedi, spies, operatives, and more. Massive wanted to create a game with a unique perspective within that universe. Several games put you in the shoes of lightsaber-wielding Jedi or the Empire-fighting Rebel, but fewer let you play as the archetype that stuck out to Massive: the scoundrel.

In the Star Wars galaxy, the scoundrel is personified by Han Solo, but even though this story takes place during the Original Trilogy, Massive didn’t want to retread that ground by making a Han Solo game. “Not once did that come up,” creative director Julian Gerighty says. “We wanted to tell different stories with different main actors, as well.”

Star Wars Outlaws Preview – Meet Kay And Nix – Game Informer

“We felt that one of the venues in Star Wars that, especially recently, hasn’t been explored as much is that of the scoundrel character,” associate narrative director John Björling says. “A relatable character, a rookie kind of taking their first steps into the galaxy, exploring the world, and really getting involved with the people and factions that make up the fabric of the galaxy. That was something that we knew very early on we wanted to pursue: to have that personal story and really make the galaxy come to life.”

Once Massive set its sights on a scoundrel experience set during the beloved Original Trilogy between the events of The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, it needed to create the right character for the adventure. “A scrappy underdog is going to use every trick in the book to get out of a tricky situation,” Gerighty says. “Sometimes, a scoundrel should avoid getting into combat, so stealth became incredibly important for us as well.”

Kay Vess

Star Wars Outlaws

To that end, Kay Vess started out as a mere pickpocket growing up in the worker’s district of Canto Bight, the planet most known for the casino scene in The Last Jedi, but after graduating to full-on thief and getting in with the wrong crowd and having a bounty placed on her head, she has to pull off the ultimate heist to attain freedom. Because of her resourcefulness, cunning, and scrappiness, she can approach situations through both stealth and gunslinging; the choice is often up to the player.

Her rough and tumble upbringing equips her well for her adventures, and the team reflects that background in her visual design. “We put a lot of care into her design and what she’s wearing and how she looks to tell her story,” associate art director Marthe Jonkers says. “She has a lot of elements in her design that tell a bit of her story. For example, she has a broken nose. She’s been through a lot; you can see that she has scars and stuff. She also has a hairpin; I love that element because she uses that to lockpick doors, and you can use that from the beginning to do some thieving.”

The team clicked particularly well with Kay because she’s neither a Jedi with superhuman reflexes nor one of the greatest fighters or pilots in the galaxy. “I think it’s very relatable as a human being on planet Earth that this character doesn’t have any magical powers or properties beyond her daring, her skills, her tools, and her buddy Nix,” game director Mathias Karlson says. “The personality type is also perfectly suited for going on a swashbuckling adventure. I think that’s something I really resonated with thinking about this character in terms of building a game and gameplay around it.”

“I think she’s a much more modern protagonist than we usually see in games,” Gerighty says. “She’s somebody who is very much a street thief who gets thrown into things that are beyond her control, and that she kind of has to think her way out of, and that makes it a little bit more relatable than somebody who has all the confidence and sarcasm and just comes off as somebody who is not believable. So having her be relatable in that way was something extremely important for us.”

Nix

Star Wars Outlaws

But Kay is not the only protagonist in Star Wars Outlaws. Massive looks at Kay and Nix as dual protagonists. As such, players are always in control of Nix as well, since Kay has the ability to send him off to perform tasks like pressing buttons, retrieving items, and distracting enemies. “Nix comes from a real gameplay need, which is to give the scoundrel character a little bit more reach, a little bit more possibilities while going through the environments while sneaking and while fighting,” Gerighty says. “We really considered them as a scoundrel/thief duo. And Nix is absolutely adorable towards Kay, but very fierce and protective as well, so he has two sides to his personality, and we’re very proud of what we created.”

Nix is a merqaal, a new species created by Massive in collaboration with Lucasfilm Games. Nix comes from an unknown rainforest planet, but at a certain point, Kay and Nix meet and become partners. When creating Nix’s design, Massive looked toward the various pets that members of the team have in their households. “Basically, he has something of all our pets in there,” Jonkers says. “Everybody had a bit of an influence on that, I would say. But also real-world animals, for example. We really wanted him to be very helpful to Kay, so he could pick up things so we looked at lemurs or monkeys. But the other side we wanted him to also have a bit of a tough side, so he has some skills, and is more reptile-inspired.”

Star Wars Outlaws

Another crucial part of Nix’s design is his ears, which help him express his emotions and mood. “When Kay’s sneaking around, you will see that he’ll put them onto his body and make a smaller silhouette,” Jonkers says. “When he’s alert, he will put them up, and I think that’s also a unique element to Nix that really gives him a lot of personality.”

When I ask if the relationship between Kay and Nix is similar to that of Han Solo and Chewbacca, Jonkers quips, “I always say, ‘Kay’s not a Solo, Kay’s a duo.'”

“We have Kay as the main character, but it’s actually Kay and Nix,” Jonkers continues. “They are the main character. We really wanted to bring this unique duo as the main character to the Star Wars galaxy. They work together a lot, and Nix helps you, but he’s really her buddy. […] That relationship and having this duo is what makes Kay a very unique character, like a unique scoundrel. She’s not on her own. She’s not doing this all by herself. She actually has her partner in crime. That brings a unique take on the scoundrel archetype.”

Fortnite’s Next Star Wars Crossover Will Span Lego, Festival, and Battle Royale Modes

Fortnite’s Next Star Wars Crossover Will Span Lego, Festival, and Battle Royale Modes

Despite currently being in the midst of a crossover event with Avatar: The Last Airbender, Fortnite is teasing an upcoming event with a returning collaborator: Star Wars. The details have yet to be disclosed, but attentive fans of the science fiction juggernaut will notice something about the start date right away. The event is set to take place on Friday, May 3. The following day, May 4th, is known to many as Star Wars Day.

The most newsworthy piece of info here, however, is the fact that the teaser indicates collaborations across several of Fortnite’s new modes. This includes the classic battle Royale mode, the survival/crafting Lego mode, and the rhythm Festival mode, though Rocket Racing was notably excluded. Crossovers between Fortnite and other IPs usually just include cosmetic bundles, but this seems to imply that it will provide content for three different areas of the game.

The current Elements event pass technically includes a Lego variant skin as well as a guitar for Festival mode, so this Star Wars event could be as simple as that, but it’s not unreasonable to speculate that Star Wars is a big enough property to warrant a larger scale crossover event. That said, this is just speculation.

Previous Star Wars crossovers included a Darth Vader boss battle, lightsabers, blasters, and force abilities, as well as a huge roster of skins spanning the movies and shows. Most recently, Ahsoka joined the fray as a part of the Chapter 4 Season 4 battle pass.

If you’re interested in more Star Wars video games, you’re in luck – we just launched our latest cover story, which features an exclusive look at Star Wars Outlaws. We’ve also got a hands-on preview, a video interview with the developers, and an entire hub devoted to this month’s coverage of the game.

Has Web Design Become Too Complex for Freelancers?

Web designers take pride in being knowledgeable. We help clients navigate challenges and establish their little corner of the internet. We guide them toward success. Doing so requires experience and know-how.

The industry has worked this way for years. However, the situation feels different these days. The job is now akin to untangling a ball of wires. We keep pulling strands while continually finding new knots.

Building websites is no longer straightforward. There is no shortage of moving parts to manage. Not to mention the related technologies we work with. It’s enough to keep freelancers up at night.

So, how did we get here? And what can we do to bring some sanity back to our lives? Let’s try and sort this out together.

More Powerful Websites Equals More Responsibility

Building a high-functioning website was once limited to enterprise organizations. They had the resources to build from the ground up. The rest of us had to settle for less.

That’s no longer the case. For example, there are now eCommerce solutions for all budgets. A freelancer can put an online store together with off-the-shelf parts.

Tools like WordPress and its ecosystem have closed the gap. The benefits are tangible. A highly functional site is now within everyone’s reach. A whole market has opened up for solo entrepreneurs and small agencies.

However, these tools also place a great deal of responsibility on developers. We now have to consider:

  • Keeping software up to date;
  • Security monitoring and remediation;
  • Interoperability with payment gateways, etc;
  • Adapting to changes in software;
  • Accessibility;
  • Privacy regulations;
  • Performance;
  • Customer support and training;

Large organizations have staff dedicated to these tasks. They should also have the budget and expertise to do the job right.

As for freelancers? Well, we must do all or most of it ourselves. All on a shoestring budget.

Looking after a single website is hard enough. Now, multiply that difficulty by the number of sites you manage. The whole thing seems unsustainable.

Has Web Design Become Too Complex for Freelancers?

Website Issues Are More Complicated than Ever

Odds are, you don’t have time for a broken website. But break they do. And their issues tend to be complicated.

Sometimes, it’s a software incompatibility. Perhaps that plugin update isn’t playing nicely with the rest of your site. You may have to work with support staff to find a resolution. That could take days or weeks.

Security issues are even worse. A hacked website can leave you scrambling for answers. And it can easily monopolize your time. There’s also the possible hit to your (and your client’s) reputation.

Then there are unexpected changes to the software we use. Themes and plugins may undergo major revisions that require developer action. From there, it’s about researching and implementing the necessary changes.

Fixing these issues takes time and money. They also place a burden on freelancers and website owners.

A broken or compromised website can monopolize your time.

How Do We Simplify This Mess?

Maybe the proverbial cat is already out of the bag. Websites are increasingly complex – and they aren’t going back. Clients aren’t likely to ask us to code like it’s 1999.

Having said that, what are some realistic things we can do to simplify? Here are a few possibilities.

Build Websites According to Need

Yes, modern website platforms are complicated. However, web designers should also share some of the blame.

We often reach for these solutions – even when they’re not necessary. The result is an over-engineered site with a lot of moving parts. Seriously, does a small brochure site need a dozen WordPress plugins?

All of these tools are within our reach. So, we use them time and again. Maybe it’s time to do more with less.

The bottom line is thinking about your current and future needs. Build websites that are as lean as possible – with room to grow.

Take Advantage of Automated Tools

We can’t be everywhere at once. However, keeping track of the websites we manage is a full-time job.

Several automated tools can help. We can employ them to monitor security issues, uptime, and performance. They can also apply software updates.

None of this means we should stop checking these items manually. We still have a responsibility to ensure everything’s working.

The idea is to spot issues and get them fixed more quickly. Automation provides an avenue for busy freelancers to do so.

Shift the Burden Where Appropriate

Web designers tend to take responsibility for tasks outside our expertise. Think email deliverability or information technology (IT) issues. It’s a common problem when working with small organizations.

Advising clients on these subjects is one thing. But maintaining them should be their job. Or they should hire specialists to deal with them.

Too often, we are stuck doing more than we should. Clients naturally come to us for answers. However, each task only adds a layer of complexity to our job. Things can get out of hand in a hurry.

Creating boundaries can help. Define your areas of expertise and stick to them. Inform clients on what you can and can’t do.

They’ll have a better understanding of who to call for specific tasks. And you’ll have more time to focus on the things within your niche.

Find ways to simplify the websites you build.

Web Designers Must Adapt to a New Reality

Being a freelance web designer has never been more complicated. There are so many tools, technologies, and best practices to study. Meanwhile, client expectations are through the roof.

All told, it’s getting harder to do our job. Therefore, we must take advantage of anything that helps us simplify.

Perhaps we also need to take a look in the mirror. How are the choices we make impacting our workload? Where can we make improvements?

The old methods of web design no longer work. Not when there is so much ground to cover. We must adapt to the reality in front of us.

Communication should also be a priority. We need to educate clients about the benefits and drawbacks of a given approach. Together, we can choose what’s right for them with an understanding of the consequences.

The key is to find better ways to assess and manage risk. That will help us transition to the next chapter of our industry.
